A unique voice cried out to us this weekend when we perused the Niagara Wine Festival guide. Legends Estates Winery in Beamsville was offering the wine and food pairing that is found standard during the festival. The brilliant twist is that they are also promoting the fact that proceeds from each DIVA wine purchase goes to Women’s Place of South Niagara. A great wine and a great cause!
Rooted since 1946 by John and Sophie Lizak, Legends Estates Winery was handed down from father to son and now grandson, Paul Lizak. Originally starting off as a small fruit farm, the winery has grown in acres and production. Passion and outstanding quality are evident when either sipping the wine or talking with the staff. Their wines have been award-winning in competitions worldwide. It speaks volumes that their Truth or Dare “Tattoo” Wines were the official wines of the 2011 Juno Awards Tribute/Gibson After Party.
The Legends Estates Winery property consists of a simple building constructed on a vineyard that takes advantage of the ideal growing conditions found at the edge of the lake shore. The winery has two-hundred acres of fruit and signature grapes to be farmed and harvested into a wide range of fruit wines and VQA grape wines.
We found ourselves unexpected guests of a wedding gearing up to start. It’s no wonder that Legends Estates Winery gets so many wedding reservations. What a perfect spot to host such an occasion! Who doesn’t want to start a new life adventure with your chosen partner under a perfectly white gazebo next to a stunning, crystal blue lake with an unlimited supply of wine?!
Pulling our eyes away from the setting, we strolled inside to begin our Discovery Pass palette adventure. The inside of the winery was really cozy and cute. So many wine varieties decorated the walls and their DIVA wines were front and center for this event.
Legends was serving up jumpin’ Red Jambalaya that paired equally well with their 2010 Merlot-Malbec and 2011 Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon. Both wines were excellent and the jambalaya left me wanting seconds!
New wine labels for the DIVA wines are being unveiled for the first time during Niagara Wine Festival 2012. Legends Estates Winery is working with local Fonthill artist, Bev Hogue, to combine her popular art with the DIVA line. Her art conveys the strength of women and “living with a broken heart, not a broken spirit.” Her designs lend themselves well to Legend’s charity of choice, Women’s Place of South Niagara.
Women’s Place has an important mission. They strive to end abuse and violence by empowering women and their children through the provision of safe shelter, counselling, education and community partnerships. All of their services are free and confidential and no matter what kind of problem you are struggling with, Women’s Place is there to listen. As a charity near and dear to Paul Lizak, he has mentioned in the past his thoughts on rebranding the DIVA labels to make the mission of DIVA wines clear. Looks like he’s finally made that happen!
Our visit was perfect and I’m sure we’ll be haunting their winery in the future. Even if we can’t swing by for a visit, their wines are offered in LCBOs across the region. Plus with their wide variance of price points and grape varieties, there is an excuse to have wine every week!
